PORTLAND, Ore. – In yet another sign of the longterm impacts the coronavirus pandemic has had on Portland businesses, Powell’s announced it would be permanently closing its Home & Garden store on Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard.

CEO Emily Powell announced the closure last Thursday. The location had been closed since the first round of coronavirus restrictions were rolled out mid-March.

“Powell’s Home & Garden store has been an important, and unique, part of our business for many years. Unfortunately it was also an increasingly challenging part of our business as retail continues its evolution,” said Powell.

With the onslaught of this year, we simply could not find a way to bring it through 2020 and 2021 and into an unknown future. We are grateful to the customers and employees who made it such a special place for so long, and think with sadness about a Powell’s without Home & Garden.

The Powell’s Bookstore location two doors down on Hawthorne will remain open. The location is primarily focused on providing books for cooking and entertaining, decorating and remodeling, gardening, landscape design, and crafts.

The company has fought closures and layoffs since the stay-home order issued in March. In July, the company permanently closed its two locations at the Portland International Airport.

Still Powell’s has worked to reopen some of its stores while abiding by Oregon’s new coronavirus measures.
