Tim Allen‘s return to a previous character was not what he expected. ET’s Lauren Zima spoke with Allen and his “Last Person Standing” co-star, Nancy Travis, forward of the ninth and ultimate period premiere of their Fox sitcom.

Throughout the chat, Allen opened up about taking part in each his latest role and a past job — Tim Taylor of “Home Improvement” — on an future episode of “Last Person Standing”, an expertise the 67-12 months-old actor known as “weird, creepy… [and] unusual.”

“It was quite peculiar to do both equally parts, I’ll notify you that. It was complicated for me to do each elements and variety of psychological,” Allen admitted, revealing that his emotions came, in huge portion, mainly because of Earl Hindman’s 2003 dying. Allen and Hindman co-starred on “Home Improvement” from 1991 to 1999, with the later actor enjoying Wilson, Allen’s onscreen neighbor.

“I adored the male and we sort of brought that up in the tale,” Allen explained. “I started out imagining about all the record I had with that Television set display, how I assess it to my daily life on this present. It’s all about decline, is all I held saying in that episode.”

Aside from the emotion encompassing the dying of his co-star, Allen discovered the knowledge of participating in both equally Tim Taylor and Mike Baxter “very difficult” for other factors as nicely.

“That was the 1st episode back again,” he explained, alluding to the show’s generation pause thanks to COVID-19.  “So having utilized to no group, and then acquiring individuals direct me in a character I developed 20 years in the past and then was kind of performed with, it [was hard].”

Allen may have discovered the working experience challenging, but Travis observed it as just another working day on established.

“It was attention-grabbing and weird,” she claimed of observing Allen play two roles. “Honestly, it was Tim’s problem. I just stood by and mocked him, so it was, frankly, incredibly easy for me.”

Allen wouldn’t spill strategies about the plot bordering Tim Taylor’s overall look, but he did tease that his “Home Improvement” and “Last Person Standing” people really don’t precisely see eye to eye.

“Taylor shed his Television display. Tool Time is more than. He had a neighbour that passed absent. He’s now performing on the corporate side of Binford Equipment. That is what he does,” Allen spelled out. “Baxter’s assisting Tim Taylor cope with change… They’re not wonderful to each individual other. They are variety of antagonistic.”

Though psychological and hard, Allen praised the episode as becoming “a great idea” that introduced Tim Taylor “into this century, into this 12 months.”

“It’s actually clever what they did with it,” he mentioned of the show’s writers.

Supporters of the show took to Twitter and shared their exhilaration for the special episode.

While Allen was restricted-lipped about the particulars of his twin role, he did give enthusiasts a hint of what to expect when “Last Male Standing” returns for its ninth and remaining year.

“By the time this airs… it will have been actually as the vaccine takes keep. We’re sort of not by it, but the light-weight is brilliant at the stop of the tunnel,” he explained of the pandemic’s job in the time. “We reference it. We recall the pandemic.
